In recognition of America 250, the regional exhibition invites visitors to explore site-specific art installations and public events designed to spark conversation, connection and contemplation.
DES MOINES, Iowa — A new site-specific public art exhibition is unfolding across Central and Southwest Iowa this summer. Using art, storytelling, and public participation, Declarations turns public space into a living conversation about who we are and what we are building together for the next 250 years.
A collaborative initiative of Group Creative Services, Whiterock Conservancy and numerous partners, visitors are invited to explore installations and events taking place through September.
The list of offerings includes:
- Ceramic works by Sue and Jim Heemstra along the Steve Garst Trail at Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids
- Immersive listening experiences by Anna Gebhardt and Philip Rabalais at Wallace Farm in Orient and Greenbelt Park in Clive
- A floating sculpture by Parts Per Million Collective at Wilson’s Farm & Orchard in Cumming that also helps remove nitrates from pond water
- A community picnic and human rocket mosaic at Union Park on July 4
- A 250-year public time capsule near the Heritage Carousel at Union Park
What’s more, Declarations is organizing a time capsule which will be encased near The Heritage Carousel in Union Park for 250 years. The public is invited to contribute at declarations.art/time or by calling 515-303-0399 to leave a voice recording.
Additional events will take place throughout the exhibition’s run. Find exhibition details along with maps, event information, suggested itineraries and artist interviews at declarations.art
